Merchant Onboarding Flow
Montonio needed a more streamlined onboarding experience for small and medium online merchants who must complete KYB (Know Your Business) verification before processing payments. The aim was to reduce friction, pull business details directly from trusted registries, and move more merchants from sign-up to their first successful transaction.🧩 The previous onboarding required merchants to manually enter large amounts of business information. This created significant friction, slowed down onboarding, and resulted in drop-off at critical steps.
The core complexity was finding ways to minimize manual input while maintaining compliance requirements and integrating data from an external business registry partner.
🧠 I contributed first as a Product Designer, later transitioning into Product Manager for the onboarding domain. My work spanned UX, validation, and cross-team coordination with internal teams and external service providers.
📌 Key Responsibilities:
- Conducting user research to understand merchant needs and pain points
- Designing UX and UI prototypes for the new onboarding flow
- Running usability tests to validate information clarity and flow efficiency
- Handing over designs and documentation to developers
- As PM, negotiating requirements with internal stakeholders
- Integrating an external business registry to automatically pull verified company data
📈 By reducing the amount of information merchants had to enter manually, the onboarding became faster, clearer, and less error-prone. This led to higher conversion rates from sign-up to activation and shortened the overall time it took merchants to get onboarded and start processing transactions.
